Frequently Asked Questions Ballet FAQ Answers to Your Common Ballet Questions

Children can start ballet as young as 3 to 4 years old in introductory or creative movement classes.

Ballet is not just about the dance - it builds a well-rounded foundation of physical health, discipline, grace and artistic appreciation. Ballet technique is also the foundation of many other dance styles (jazz, comtemporary, lyrical), making it easier to transition later.

The main difference between "Mummy and Me" ballet and Pre-Ballet classes lies in the age of children, level- of independence, and structure of the class. A "Mummy and Me" ballet class typically 2.5 years old to 3 years, and a parent/caregiver actively participates in the class. We focus on basic movement and music exploration; socialization and bonding; coordination and listening skills. Inspiring children with songs, games, and imaginative play. In short, "Mummy and Me" ballet is a gently, introductory bonding experience, while Pre-Ballet is the first step toward structured dance training.

Being with a parent/caregiver in class helps toddlers feel secure and supported, especially in a new environment. This emotional safety helps reduce separation anxiety when transitioning to independent classes like Pre-Ballet. To develop listening and social skills as kids begin to follow simple instructions, increase spatial and rhythmic awareness and take turns - essential skills for Pre-Ballet. Activities promote balance, coordination, and gross motor development - these foundational movements make the transition to ballet technique smoother later.

Generally, children should bring a water bottle besides wearing a proper dancewear and dance shoes. For new students, they are allowed to wear a baby tee and legging/stretchable pants with little skirt. Specific requirements may vary by classes/grades/levels.

Keeps hair out of the face, so your child can see clearly, and avoid tripping or bumping into others. Tidy hair helps prevent it from falling into the eyes during turns or spins, which can be distracting and unsafe. A tidy hairstyle, like a ballet bun, allows the teacher and also the students to clearly see the neck, shoulders and head alignment, which are crucial for teaching correct posture and technique.

Ratios vary by age group and class level. For toddler class is 1 teacher for every 6-8 students (with parent participation). For other grades/level, a common standard is 1 teacher for every 10 to 12 students to ensure individualized attention and safety.

Our Academy offers opportunities for parental involvement through volunteering, attending events like parents week, and participating in parent-teacher meetings.
